How do I know if I need root canal treatment?

Root canal is the space in the root of a tooth which houses the nerves, blood and tissues. It is the ‘live’ part of the tooth. The root canal is extension of the pulp chamber, so it is also called pulp canal.

Many people believe root canal treatment to be a painful experience, however modern day dentistry has come a long way and root canal treatment is no more painful than undergoing a filling. The experience of suffering from pain from the pulp and root canal is more painful than the treatment itself. Having severe root canal pain is uncomfortable and can stop you from undertaking everyday activities.

There are a few tell-tale signs that may alert you as to whether or not you may need root canal treatment. Some of the most common signs include:

  • Experiencing tooth pain
  • Sustained sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Sore and tender gums in an isolated area
  • Large hole in tooth
  • Darkening of a tooth
  • Abscess in the gums
  • Facial Swelling
  • Loose tooth/teeth

Sometimes you may experience one, all or none of these symptoms. The only way to determine whether you need root canal treatment is to visit your North Sydney dentist.

Pain in pulp and root canal is mostly encouraged by tooth decay and therefore the best way to prevent needing root canal treatment is to ensure a consistent teeth cleaning regime. Some people however, may be more susceptible to tooth decay due to genetics and other predisposing characteristics. Other factors can contribute to needing root canal treatment such as grinding of teeth, large fillings, over-done tooth repair, damage to the tooth (such as chips or cracks) or even being in an accident of sorts.

Root canal treatment involves 2 to 3 dental visits where your North Sydney dentist will clean and shape the root canal/s to remove all infection and then fill it.
