Tooth Extractions

Sometimes if a tooth is beyond repair from advanced stages of decay, we may recommend extraction.

Tooth extraction is sometimes unavoidable. A tooth may need to be extracted if it is broken, severely decayed, or has become very loose due to gum and bone disease (periodontitis). If possible, we always try to save the tooth with a filling, root canal treatment (RCT), a crown, or other restorative options. However, in some cases the tooth cannot be saved and must be removed.

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions are performed under a local anaesthetic using specialised dental tools to gently remove the tooth from its socket. Our caring dentists do everything possible to ensure patients experience minimal discomfort throughout the procedure. At Dentalini, we strongly believe in pain-free dentistry.

Surgical Extractions

If a problem tooth is positioned deep within the jaw or is difficult to remove, a surgical extraction may be recommended. This procedure involves making a small incision in the gums and, in some cases, removing a small amount of bone. Sutures (stitches) are placed after the tooth is removed. For complex cases, especially involving wisdom teeth, a referral to an oral surgeon may be advised.

Common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Extra teeth blocking the eruption of other teeth
  • Serial extraction to assist with eruption and alignment of teeth and support orthodontic (braces) treatment
  • Creating space in the mouth for braces
  • Severely decayed teeth that cannot be saved
  • Grossly broken teeth
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease causing very loose teeth
  • Teeth that must be removed before radiation treatment to the head and neck
  • Infected teeth caused by cancer medications that weaken the immune system
  • Teeth removed prior to organ transplantation to reduce infection risk
  • Wisdom teeth (third molars) commonly removed in the late teens or early twenties
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that cannot erupt properly and cause pain or decay
  • Wisdom teeth with insufficient space causing gum irritation, pain, or swelling

If tooth removal results in an unsightly gap, your dentist may discuss replacement options such as dental implants, bridges, or removable dentures to restore function and maintain your natural smile.
