Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt at the back of each side of the upper and lower jaws. When they align correctly and the surrounding gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth may not pose any problems.
Unfortunately, wisdom teeth often do not have enough space to erupt into proper position or may grow at an abnormal angle. As a result, they are commonly extracted either before or after eruption, typically during the late teenage years or early twenties.
Impacted wisdom teeth are teeth that remain trapped in the jawbone or gums and cannot erupt normally. Wisdom teeth extraction is a very common procedure and is often recommended early to prevent complications such as pain, swelling, infection, or damage to neighbouring teeth.
Because wisdom teeth are difficult to reach and clean, they can easily trap bacteria, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and infection. Routine dental X-rays can help determine whether wisdom teeth need to be removed.
Impaction
- Tooth crowding
- Increased risk of tooth decay
- Infection and abscess formation
- Gum disease
If a wisdom tooth is partially erupted and stuck beneath the gum, it can make brushing and flossing painful and difficult. Impacted wisdom teeth may lead to:
Treatment
For impacted wisdom teeth, a small incision is made in the gum tissue to access the tooth. In some cases, a small amount of surrounding bone must be removed. The tooth may then be divided into smaller sections to allow safe and controlled removal.
After the tooth is removed, stitches are placed to close the gum tissue. These sutures may dissolve naturally or be removed during a follow-up visit, depending on the type used.
All wisdom teeth extractions are performed as outpatient procedures under appropriate anaesthesia in our clinic. This ensures maximum patient comfort and convenience while maintaining the highest standards of safety using modern equipment and techniques.
